Jagoda Dance Ensemble

Jagoda Dance Ensemble is promoting folk culture through artistic dancers, passionate songs, and colorful performances, throughout the community. The group aims to acquaint Polish-Americans with the richness of our culture and to help build pride of our heritage and traditions.

The goal of this group is to pass on to the next generation the treasures of Polish folklore with its uniqueness, diversity, and power of expression. The repertoire includes melodies, songs, and dances from all regions of Poland as well as Polish national dances. Every effort is made to preserve and perform authentic traditional Polish dances.

The Polish Hussars

The Polish Hussars, also known as the Winged Hussars, were a heavy cavalry unit in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1503 to 1702. They were considered to be one of the deadliest armies in Europe and played a vital role in military history.

Here are some things to know about the Polish Hussars:

  • The word “hussar” may come from the Serbian word usar, which means “warrior on horseback” or “mercenary”. It may also come from the Hungarian word huszár, which is a combination of the words husz, meaning “twenty”, and ar, meaning “knight’s fee” or “landed estate”.
  • During their charges, the Polish Hussars would shout “Jezus Maria” (“Jesus, Mary”) or “Matka Boska” (“Mother of God”).
  • The Polish Hussars were known for the large wings mounted on the backs of their saddles. These wings were intended to demoralize the enemy during a charge.
  • The Polish Hussars dominated the eastern European theaters of war during the early modern period.
  • The Polish Hussars were armed with wooden lances, sabres, and shields.
